| These simple steps will prevent
"wavy" borders. If the quilt top is not square or
flat, these steps will help contain the problem towards
the center of the quilt: Determine sashing and border lengths for a quilt by measuring the quilt
(or blocks) in 3 to 5 places (including the center). If these
measurements vary slightly, average them. If the numbers vary by
more than 1/2 inch, take more time to suare up the blocks or quilt.
Borders are
best cut on the lengthwise grain because it has very little stretch.
For borders less than 40", they may be cut on the cross grain but beware
of the slight stretch. Use sizing or spray starch to minimize the
stretch. When pressing borders, do not use steam.
Carefully measure and mark the edges of the quilt top and the borders, pin
to accurately align. Sew multiple borders together first then add
them as one unit to the quilt top.
