Preparing Your Quilt for Machine Quilting

Preparation Check List

When machine quilting, your quilt back and top are pinned to rails that are perfectly parallel, if your quilt top is not square, tucks or puckers can occur.  Every effort is made to complete your top with accuracy.  Poor piecing can result in areas of puffiness.  Quilting is a passion and enjoying the process is most important.  There are no "Quilt Police" and every quilt is beautiful in my eyes.  Your quilt will not be judged by the quilter; however, your quilt top should be as flat as possible.  Wavy borders will create a wrinkled look when quilted.  See Applying Borders Tips at the bottom of this page.

Do NOT baste quilt.

Top and back should be pressed.

Mark the top of your quilt and backing fabric.

Backing fabric and batting should be AT LEAST 4" to   6" bigger on all sides.

Quilt back should have 1/2" seam allowance pressed open, selvages removed.  Please no serging!

Loose threads should be removed.  Dark threads will show through light colored fabrics when quilted.

Applying Borders

These simple steps will prevent "wavy" borders.  If the quilt top is not square or flat, these steps will help contain the problem towards the center of the quilt:

Determine sashing and border lengths for a quilt by measuring the quilt (or blocks) in 3 to 5 places (including the center).  If these measurements vary slightly, average them.  If the numbers vary by more than 1/2 inch, take more time to suare up the blocks or quilt.

Borders are best cut on the lengthwise grain because it has very little stretch.  For borders less than 40", they may be cut on the cross grain but beware of the slight stretch.  Use sizing or spray starch to minimize the stretch.  When pressing borders, do not use steam.

Carefully measure and mark the edges of the quilt top and the borders, pin to accurately align.  Sew multiple borders together first then add them as one unit to the quilt top.
